About Me

Hi! My name is Laura, the editor behind Penultimate Edits.

Growing up, I always had my nose in a book. I was drawn to rich, immersive stories. I still am. I was also a theatre kid. So, when I went to university, I studied theatre, Dramaturgy/Criticism to be specific.

Dramaturgy as a field asks big-picture questions, and one significant point of discussion was the role of theatre in society. I resonated with the idea that theatre holds a mirror up to society and reflects back to an audience what it sees. (Yes, similar to Hamlet’s monologue in Act 3, Scene 2.)

Over time, I came to believe that good art, the kind that is emotionally resonant and honest, requires an understanding of what is in the mirror. It is important to understand how systems, behavior, and culture intersect to shape the world we live in. Otherwise, we risk making bad art. The idea of ‘bad art’ is not just something being aesthetically displeasing. Rather, ‘bad art’ perpetuates uninterrogated ideas and misinformation, which is immensely consequential for our society.

This train of thought led me to the social sciences. This discipline taught me the knowledge, tools, and frameworks for exploring both macro and micro-level questions with academic rigor.

With my interdisciplinary background in the humanities and social sciences, I done a wide range of reading and writing. It also provided me with an opportunity to reflect on what makes for good writing and the writing process.

Good writing clearly expresses thoughtful ideas, has a sound internal structure and logic, and stays true to the author's voice. Editing, therefore, is a gradual process of refinement aimed at achieving this goal.

No matter the project, your work deserves thoughtful attention and respect for your ideas. Editing from the heart, if you will.
